Frequency converters with energy recovery deliver a substantial reduction in energy requirement in all applications in which the slowing of large masses by braking occurs frequently: for example, in hoisting applications, centrifuges, or conveyor belts. This is because, unlike in conventional drive systems, the braking energy generated is not eliminated by means of braking resistors, but instead is fed back into the supply grid. By using this smart infeed technology, energy savings of up to 50 percent are possible, for example, in hoisting applications. Components like line reactors and braking resistors are made superfluous and the power consumption required is reduced by about 20 percent. Space requirements for the drive system are correspondingly lower and heat development is reduced.
